Magdalena House was founded in 1985 with the mission of¡°building a history of hope through sharing, respect and coexistence with afocus on the happiness and rights of women inprostitution¡± Magdalena House provides legal counseling, psychologicalcounseling, vocational training, medical services, and education to supportwomen in prostitution to empower themselves and to pursue their basic rights.

- Shelters (Magdalena House Shelter, Neoreun Shelter)

Magdalena House runs two shelters, both of which are locatedin Yongsan, Seoul. They provide accommodations and meals, a variety of programsto assist women in dealing with physical or psychological problems, and otherservices such as literacy, self-leadership training, and job placement classes.

- Magdalena Counseling Center

Magdalena Counseling Center is located near the YongsanRed-light District. It provides legal counseling and services such asaccompaniment for judicial procedures, medical services, out-reach activities,and connecting the women with social resources. It runs the Iteawon Sarangbang(drop-in center) as well.

- The Courageous Women Research Center (CWRC)

CWRC conducts research and publishes with a focus onmarginalized lives. Starting as an impromptu group in 2002, it was formallyestablished in 2007 as part of Magdalena House. The Research Center iscommitted to listening to, collecting, and analyzing the life stories ofcourageous women/men who have lived in the shadow of stigma and discrimination.

- Donggori (noodle restaurant)

Donggori was started in 2010 to support the self-reliance ofwomen in vulnerable economic situations. It provides an opportunity for them towork a proper job as employee or future business owner, trying to promotewomen's leadership and empowerment. With the motto "Good eats made bymotherhood", it serves Korean-style noodles in anchovy soup, noodles mixedwith vegetables and red pepper sauce and noodles in cold bean soup, etc.

µ¿°í¸®´Â Ãë¾àÇÑ °æÁ¦Àû ¿©°Ç¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ¿©¼ºµéÀÇ ÀÚÈ°À» ÁöÁöÇϱâÀ§ÇØ 2010³â¿¡ ½ÃÀ۵Ǿú½À´Ï´Ù. ¿©¼ºµé¿¡°Ô ÀÏÀÚ¸®¸¦ Á¦°øÇÏ°í¸®´õ½Ê°ú ¿ª·®°­È­¸¦ ÁõÁøÇÏ¿© ±Ù·ÎÈ°µ¿À» ÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖµµ·Ï µ½°í, ¹Ì·¡¿¡´Â â¾÷À» ÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ´Â ±âȸµµ Á¦°øÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ¡°¾ö¸¶ ¼Õ¸ÀÀ¸·Î ¸¸µç °Ç°­ÇÑ À½½Ä¡±À» ¸ðÅä·Î ÇÏ¿© ¸êÄ¡±¹¼ö, ºñºö±¹¼ö, Äá±¹¼ö µîÀ» ÆǸÅÇÏ°í ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù.

 

¡Û The Yongsan Red-Light District

The Yongsan red-light district is located between a main roadlined by super-modern high-rises and the Yongsan railway station. It developedaround the itinerants' hostels around the Yongsan station immediately after theKorean War(1950-3). The area is divided into two sections- one section with"glass booths", and the other section with "hee-bbari [solicitation]alleys". In 2005, there were a total of 102 venues, with about 150 womenworking in the area. The alleys are not only the women's workplace, but alsowhere many men and women in the area have spent much of their lives. This areahas been significantly affected by the 2004 anti-prostitution laws, as well asplans for its demolition as part of urban renewal. Magdalena House has been a part of the lives of the women of this districtsince its beginning in 1985. In recent years, it has conducted an oral historyproject of women who have worked and lived in this area, and recorded theirexperience of everyday life with photographs taken by themselves.

ÀÌ Áö¿ªÀº ¿©¼ºµéÀÌ ÀÏÇÏ´Â °ø°£ÀϻӸ¸ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó, ¸¹Àº ¿©¼ºµé/ ³²¼ºµéÀÌ ±×µéÀÇ »îÀÇ ¸¹Àº ºÎºÐÀ»º¸³»´Â °÷ÀÔ´Ï´Ù. 2004³âÀÇ ¼º¸Å¸ÅƯº°¹ýÀÌ Å« ¿µÇâÀ» ³¢ÃÆ°í, ÇöÀç´Âµµ½Ã Àç°³¹ßÀÇ ÀÏȯÀ¸·Î ö°Å°¡ ¿¹Á¤µÈ Áö¿ªÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ¸·´Þ·¹³ª°øµ¿Ã¼´Â1985³â ¼³¸³ºÎÅÍ ÀÌ Áö¿ªÀÇ ¿©¼ºµé°ú ÇÔ²² »îÀ» ³ª´©¾î¿Ô½À´Ï´Ù.
